I Just Like Reading. You Should, Too.

Series Summary: Cat, aka Catherine, Cristine, and Kitten (for Bones’ use only), is a half-vampire intent on killing vampires because they’re evil, her dad was one and he raped her mom, and for other family issues that would be discussed in the book.

Enter Bones: other readers say this character should remind me of Spike from Buffy, but since I wasn’t really a fan of the series, it didn’t register. Nevertheless, I liked him a lot. He’s a Master Vampire (I kinda wish they had a better name for this, but anyway) and after some sexy, funny twists in the story, he offers Cat a choice: be his protege and learn how to kill Master Vampires or…well, die.

Review: There are three books in the series so far – Halfway to the Grave, One Foot in the Grave, and At Grave’s End – with the fourth one coming out in…May, I think. I’ve read the first and never stopped reading till I got to the end of Book 3. My final say on the series: SUPERB!

I’ve tried reading the few bad reviews on this series in Amazon just to be objective – see if they saw something I did – and the most I could come up with was that this was like a copycat for Buffy. Can’t say anything about that but I STILL think this is a helluva great series and I really do looooooove Bones! :)

I never thought I’d find someone as adorable as Eric Sinclair from the Betsy Series of MJD but Bones stole my heart completely.

One big YEY for Jeaniene (her name’s hard to spell, don’t you think?) Frost. Hope the series lasts forever!!!

{February 2, 2009}   Short but Sweet

I’m going to post a couple of book reviews in a while…I’ll keep them short but sweet so I can tackle as many as possible. I can’t keep up with my reading…hopefully next time I’ll be able to review at leisure…also, I’ve decided to keep my reviews to one per series. So there

After Elizabeth Rossiter had suffered a broken heart and a ruined reputation, she left London behind and took a position as companion to the daughter of a wealthy country family. But now, to her horror, the one man in the world she hoped never to see again–Robert Denning, Marquess of Hetherington–has appeared in the neighborhood.

If you like the guy running after the girl over and over, this is something you’ll definitely enjoy. :)

She’s all that…But if she’s so smart and pretty, how come she’s not with anyone?

Junior marketing executive Rudie Bermejo can’t figure out why she’s never had a boyfriend, and why no one seems interested beyond being friends. All her friends tell her she looks great, and her boss thinks she’s got the smarts to make it big, and guys think she’s a cool chick to hang with. That should make her a catch, right?

Determined to graduate from the No Boyfriend Since Birth Society, Rudie decides to take matters into her own able hands. And the dating spree is only the beginning…

Almost every a girl I know who ADORES this book is single and NBSB herself. If anything, Betita should be congratulated for coining a new term – or at least making it popular. As for me, since I was already committed by the time I read the book, I didn’t feel as kilig as I probably should have. My bad there maybe.

And honestly, I didn’t find the hero that sexy to begin with but again, that’s just me.

If you’re single, I think it’s safe to say you’ll love this book or at the least, find lots of things in common with the heroine. If you’re not single, it’s a hit-or-miss thing. :)

{September 29, 2007}   Tough Love by Melissa Salva

Mia is a 23-year-old web designer, karateka, and self-styled manang who likes to play it safe.

With clothes…
If not the comfortable training suits, only buttoned-up tops that don’t show too much skin, skirts that fall below the knees, and pants safe enough to run in will do.

With web design…
Can you say, “Predictable?”

With karate…
She’s managed, to her karate teacher’s surprise, to rise to the rank of brown belt without having joined a single tournament. Her biggest fear? A bloody or broken nose.

And when it comes to love and relationships…
She’ll share afternoon lattés and a kiss with a perfect stranger in a foreign country (using a fake name, of course).
She can even imagine getting it on with her training buddy and devoted best guy friend (well, sometimes).
But she’ll never, ever, risk getting her heart seriously broken.

All that is about to change.

This, by far, is my favorite Summit paperback of all. :) I love the fact that Mia’s a website designer and not another writer or magazine or advertising intern / employee. Maiba-iba naman, thank God. :) And I find Leo absolutely sexy! The karate scenes are also fun! A very entertaining read that you could read from cover to cover. :)

{September 29, 2007}   The Breakup Diaries by Maya Calico

When her perfect boyfriend – college hoop star, certified hottie and young hotshot legal eagle Itos Ongpauco – decided call it quits, 23-year-old Monica, barista by day and dreamer by night, found herself stepping out from behind the coffee counter and out of her comfort zone-into the mad world of magazine publishing. While starting out at the bottom of the food chain as the overworked, unpaid intern at M magazine can obliterate any trace of a self-esteem, anything – including bitchy bosses, temperamental photographers, rather dull but oh-so hot male models – is a welcome balm to Monica’s pains.

Never mind that her freebie-obsessed boss treats her like an on-call, 24-hour proxy service. Never mind that, sometimes, when she’s had too much alcohol, male models become irresistible. Never mind that, despite having just had her heart broken, the possibility of love presents itself again.

I first tried to read this book because it was written by Maya Calico – I knew her as Candy Mag’s EIC then and I was interested in seeing how she’d do as a novelist. Secondly, I was intrigued by the diary-style of the book.

Overall, I’d say that the Breakup Diaries would make girls currently experiencing their own heartbreaks say “I can so totally relate”. The ending’s cute, too.

{September 29, 2007}   Drama Queen by Abi Aquino

Beautiful, talented, and starving theater actress Kach, who has a real penchant for drama, lives off the refrigerators and affection of her dearest childhood friends. Now Kach has finally landed a legitimate role costarring an intense, sexy and brooding young stage actor of the James Dean mold named Sanchez. Their onstage chemistry quickly reaches boiling point and suddenly Kach finds herself in an exciting romance, complete with snatches of smooches behind closed stage curtains. But their romance takes a dramatic turn when Kach discovers that Sanchez isn’t tailor-made for the role of her real-life leading man… and that someone else is ready and willing to audition!

I love the name Kach. It fits the character very well, actually. But unfortunately, that’s just about all I can say of her. Kach isn’t really my preferred heroine so, even though I enjoyed her exchanged with Jorge, I wasn’t able to fall in love with them both. But this is a very cosmopolitan read and one, I’m sure, will appeal to other girls.

{September 29, 2007}   Gal on the Go by Sarah Matias

One of the most sought-after events organizers on this side of the map, Belle de la Fuente is always on the run to host a party or attend a meeting or pacify her friend Vanessa, Jessica Simpson’s Filipina counterpart. Despite all the stress her job gives her, she is addicted to the rush, and somehow, this makes her feel complete. Then her best friend Gino comes back from the States after four long years. Suddenly, something inside of her stirs and makes her wonder: could it be possible that she may not really know what she’s missing? Or worse, that she already missed?

I like the chemistry between Gino and Belle, but I found Gino just a tad bit more timid than I like. Vanessa is cute and maybe this is the ditz-loving part of me talking, but sometimes, I felt like Belle and her friend were condescending towards Vanessa. And of course I didn’t like that. I used to hate girls like Vanessa but in recent years, I’ve come to appreciate them as they are and actually find them adorable. :)

Oh, and I love love the ending. ;) Nothing overtly sweet but…you’ll know when you read it.

I love, love this book! And I super love the author as well. She’s my second favorite MB author, right next to Lynne Graham. Her characters are more “real” but because I love escapist romances, that particular characteristic sometimes turns me of…just a little bit though…and that’s why I still like Lynne Graham more.

Summary: Cass had been a mistress to Maximos Guiliano for a few years – but she became one because she truly loved the Sicilian tycoon. Although pain always engulfed her whenever Maximos was cold, unreachable, and making her feel the line separating their lives, she continued to stay in the relationship…until something tragic happened.

Now, Cass was back in Maximos’ life, in the arms of his worst enemy and bent on revenge. He return would also let her know why Maximos had never considered making her his wife throughout the years they’ve been together.

This is the best and most moving novel I’ve read from her so far. I love how Maximos could be so strong and yet so vulnerable. Can’t help but cry when they can finally be together…married. This is another must-read!
